Why do our fingers make a sound?

Fingers can sound because there is a gap between the finger joints. When you click your finger, air bubbles form in the joint fluid to burst.

This is a bit like blowing up a balloon, in that you stretch the walls of the balloon outwards until it pops.

After ringing your finger, you won't be able to ring it again right away. Because, the air waves in the joint fluid takes time to form and accumulate again.

What Are the Dangers of Ringing Your Fingers Often?

Arthritis is often considered a bad effect due to frequent ringing of the fingers.

However, according to research in the Swiss Medical Journal, there is no evidence that snapping fingers triggers arthritis or joint inflammation.

Similar results were recorded in a study in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology. In that research, a doctor experimented on himself by ringing his left finger 2 or more times per day for 50 years. He didn't do the same with his right hand.

After completing the experiment, he discovered that the joints of his left hand were no different from the joints of his right hand. There were also no hands showing symptoms of arthritis.

A study involving a sample of 28 people reached a similar conclusion.

Despite these studies, constant finger ringing has led to cases of tendon dislocation or injury. However, this danger of ringing the finger is rare.

If you click your finger, it's unlikely to cause any harm. Except, the force used was excessive and the wrong technique resulted in injury.

How to Stop the Habit of Ringing Your Fingers

Although harmless, ringing your fingers may be distracting to others who hear the sound.

Keep your hands busy with other stress relievers, such as squeezing a stress ball or using a hand gripper to strengthen your grip

Every time you want to ring your finger, try to stop it yourself consciously

Think about why you are ringing your fingers, identify the problem that triggers the habit

Although ringing your fingers is generally harmless, those of you who have this habit should still be vigilant. If there is swelling or changes in the shape of the joint, see a doctor immediately.

If your finger hurts or swells when you click it, there may be a pre-existing condition, such as arthritis or high uric acid levels. Do not hesitate to consult a doctor to help you find out the cause.
